Chapter Six – Ewan

They were sucked underneath this bizarre world, dragged by dark hands which he couldn’t fight against, even when assuming his powerful bear form. He struggled, roared, but his roars fell to silence when taken beneath the ground. The world seemed to brush into him, earth and stone scraping over his skin and somehow shifting aside like Jell-O—until he popped out of the bottom and into a strange, colorless world, and nothing but him for what seemed like infinity in each direction.

Black, white, and gray colors. Then from the ceiling popped Amity, and Louise, and they scrambled upright, Louise puzzled, Amity horrified.

Out of immediate danger, the hands that grabbed them having vanished from existence, Ewan cautiously sniffed the air, and caught nothing. Not even the faintest stirring of a breeze. This place felt unnatural. It disturbed him deep in his soul, and he grimaced, sniffing the air, trying, trying to catch any kind of scent at all. Finally, he got a whiff of Amity and Louise’s scents, earthy and stale sweat and fear.

“Where are we?” Louise asked then. “I don’t recognize this place at all. This is nothing to do with my memories.”

Odd. Disconcerting, too. They were trying to figure out the rules of this world, and the next thing that happens, they get sucked under the earth as if it was made out of putty.

He’d also just gotten a kind of reprieve with Amity as well. A chance for them to truly move on and become less about being enemies, more about being actual work colleagues.

Except, he wasn’t sure if he wanted them to be work colleagues. He’d rather they didn’t work in the same place at all. Because then… then…

“We can’t be here,” Amity gasped, eyes wide and full of fear. “No. No way. You’re seeing this, right? The black and white?”

“Yeah… you know what this place is?” Ewan asked, glancing around, trying to make sense of the monochrome world he now saw.

“This is the Other Side,” Amity said, running her hands through her hair. “This is the one place where we shouldn’t be. It’s where you go if you’re a necromancer or if you’re dead.”

“We’re dead?” Louise now appeared panicked, and her voice went up an octave. “No way!”

Dead? Ewan checked his bear paws, confused, and growled, “I don’t feel dead.” He felt his body, and the ground beneath him, and his nostrils picked up their scents, and they didn’t smell dead to him. Death had a certain odor about it that reeked through the atmosphere, and he expressed as much to them.

“Perhaps we’re not dead, then. We’re too rational right now. The dead become shadows of their former selves, they’re not quite the same people as they were when alive.” Amity looked around as if expecting to see something join them, and Ewan examined the ceiling, which was no longer a ceiling, but an open expanse of black and white sky. “But this is what necromancers see when they travel to the Other Side. It has layers.
